Construction Skills College, an accredited ELC learning provider, delivers a variety of outstanding construction courses tailored to equip students with essential industry skills.

ELC Funded Construction Courses for Armed Forces Service Leavers (ELCAS)

If you’re leaving the Armed Forces and plan to use Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) through the ELCAS scheme, our ELC funded construction courses are designed to help you retrain with practical, job-focused skills and achieve a recognised Level 3 qualification. Training is hands-on at our Stoke-on-Trent centre, with tools and materials provided, so you leave with real capability — not just assessment prep.

Based in Stoke-on-Trent with learners travelling from across the UK. You’re welcome to visit the centre while courses are running and see the standard of work produced.

Quick guide (important): If you’re using ELC funding, you can normally select one ELC-funded course from the six options listed below per financial year. ELC funding cannot be used for our other course options. Read the course pages for full details and eligibility.

ELCAS / ELC Funded Construction Courses: What to Expect (Service Leaver Guide)

Quick summary: ELC-funded courses can lead to the same qualification outcome at different providers — but the training quality can vary. We focus on hands-on, job-relevant skills so you’re prepared to actually do the work after the course, not just pass an assessment.

How our ELC funded routes are structured

Our ELC funded programmes are built using recognised trade training blocks such as:

  • Kitchen fitting: 8 days (where included)
  • Core trade options: 9-day blocks (e.g., plumbing, tiling, carpentry, plastering, electrical)
  • Bricklaying: 10 days (where included)

Train in one block or spread it out

Depending on the route, some learners complete training in one block, while others plan training across a period (for example, around resettlement timelines or funding year planning). Some course routes can be spread over up to 12 months depending on the structure and availability.

Who Are These ELC Funded Courses For?

Armed Forces service leavers using ELC funding (ELCAS)

These pages and course options are specifically written for service leavers who are using ELC funding through the ELCAS scheme and want a practical route into construction, installation, or property maintenance work.

Career changers planning employment or self-employment

Many service leavers want a trade that can lead to employment quickly, or a realistic self-employed pathway. The aim here is practical confidence, reliable workflow habits, and problem-solving skills that carry across real jobs.

Those who want an accredited Level 3 outcome

If a recognised Level 3 qualification is important for your progression plan, these ELC funded routes are designed around accredited outcomes alongside practical skills.

What You Will Learn on Our ELC Funded Multi-Trade Routes

Core skills across your selected trade blocks

  • Safe working habits, job setup and professional standards
  • Correct tool use and practical methods used on real jobs
  • Measuring, accuracy, setting out and finishing standards that reduce rework
  • Working to realistic constraints (obstacles, uneven surfaces, tight tolerances)
  • Trade-specific workflows based on the route you choose (e.g., kitchen/bathroom install sequences)

Route-dependent skills examples

  • Kitchen installation routes: unit fitting, precision fitting, worktop joins, layout planning and practical install workflow
  • Bathroom installation routes: practical sequencing, finishing standards, and associated trade integration (route-dependent)
  • Property maintenance routes: broader capability to handle multi-trade domestic maintenance and refurb tasks

Practical-first: The aim is that you leave able to apply your skills on real work — with support available after training if you need guidance as you get started.

What You’ll Be Able to Do After Training

  • Carry out practical installation and maintenance tasks aligned to your chosen course route
  • Plan and sequence work more confidently (reducing mistakes and snagging)
  • Work to a professional standard with better accuracy, finishing, and problem-solving
  • Progress into employment or self-employment with a more job-ready skillset and clearer pathway
  • Achieve an accredited Level 3 outcome on the relevant route

How to Use ELC Funding for These Courses (Step-by-Step)

  1. Choose your ELC funded route from the six options listed above (ELCAS pages)
  2. Read the course page fully to confirm what trades are included / selectable and how the route is structured
  3. Check the key rule: if using ELC funding, you’ll normally select one ELC-funded course option — ELC funding is not used for our other course options
  4. Plan your training dates around resettlement timelines and (where relevant) funding-year strategy
  5. Contact us if unsure — we’ll help you choose the most suitable route for your goal and background

Qualifications & Accreditation (ELC Funded Routes)

Clear guidance: These ELC funded routes are designed to support a recognised Level 3 outcome while ensuring you leave with practical ability you can use on real work.

Accredited Level 3 outcomes (route-dependent)

  • ELC funded programmes are aligned to the relevant accredited qualification outcome for the route you choose (e.g., kitchen installation certificate, property maintenance award/certificate/diploma pathways).
  • Some routes allow you to customise trade selection (for example, kitchen fitting plus additional trades) depending on the programme structure.

ELCAS / ELC Funding Rules + Planning Your Training

Important: If you’re using ELC funding (ELCAS), you can choose one of the six ELC funded courses listed on this page. ELC funding cannot be used for our other course options.

How to get the best outcome from your ELC funded training

  • Pick the route that matches your job goal (kitchen installer, bathroom installer, property maintenance, or broader multi-trade pathway)
  • Prioritise practice time — the more hands-on training you do, the more confident you’ll be on real work
  • Visit a training centre if comparing providers — look at bay sizes, learner work quality, and how practical the teaching is

Why Choose Our ELC Funded Courses?

We focus on practical training from day one, using realistic setups and supportive teaching. Our goal is that service leavers finish training able to apply the skills in real jobs — with ongoing support available after the course.

  • Hands-on from day one: practical training is prioritised
  • Supportive teaching: clear instruction and patient guidance for adult learners
  • Realistic work areas: learn with practical constraints and job-style setups
  • Tools & materials included: you don’t need to supply equipment
  • Service leaver experience: we’ve supported large numbers of ELC-funded learners through training
  • Post-course support: guidance as you begin applying skills on real work
