Bricklaying Course FAQs

Do I need any experience to join this bricklaying course?
No. This course is suitable for complete beginners, career changers and learners with little or no previous bricklaying experience.
Are tools and materials provided?
Yes. All tools and materials needed for the course projects are provided.
What will I actually build on the course?
You will build real practice structures such as straight walls, corners, returns, piers, cavity work concepts, garden walls and decorative panels, with a focus on accuracy including plumb, level, range and gauge.
Can I do the course without taking a certificate?
Yes. Many learners complete the standard 10 Day Bricklaying Course for the practical skills alone, without choosing a certificate.
What certificate options are available on the bricklaying course?
You can complete the course with no certificate, add the AIM Qualifications Level 3 unit certificate titled “Bricklaying Skills” for £100, or add the City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills (Bricklaying) for £250.
What is the difference between the AIM and City & Guilds options?
The AIM option is a shorter accredited unit certificate and is often chosen by learners who want evidence of structured learning. The City & Guilds option is a more widely recognised qualification and is often chosen by learners who want a recognised qualification for progression.
How does the City & Guilds option work?
You attend the same standard 10 day course, but complete additional assessments during the course and some home study before the end of the course. The additional cost for this route is £250.

You can learn strong fundamentals in two weeks, especially on a practical-heavy course. Becoming fully confident depends on the quality of training and the practice you do afterwards, starting with straightforward projects and building up.
Do you cover setting out properly?
Yes. Setting out is a core part of good brickwork, and we focus on correct start points, corners, returns, line work and level work so your brickwork looks professional and stays accurate.
Do you teach quoting and pricing for brickwork jobs?
Yes. We include practical guidance on estimating materials and time, planning a job sequence, and producing a simple quote for typical domestic brickwork so you understand the real-world workflow.
Will I be able to take on paid work after the course?
Many learners use the course as a starting point and then progress by applying the same methods on simple jobs first. Confidence grows quickly when you build progressively and use tutor support if needed.
Do I need a CSCS card straight away?
For many domestic and private jobs you will not. For larger construction sites, a CSCS card is often required. The best route depends on your work goals.
Can I visit the training centre before booking?
Yes. We welcome visits while courses are running so you can see the standard of work produced by learners.
What support is available after the course?
After completing the course you will have ongoing access to tutor support via phone, email, WhatsApp or in-person visits, at no additional cost.

A huge thanks to Tony (tutor) for his time, effort, knowledge and impact he had on my learning experience in a skill I had never completed before.  Having attended other courses recently in other sectors outside of the courses offered at Construction Skills College, for example a landscaping course, the value for money and what is taught is incredible in such as short period of time. The tempo of the course suited all abilities and speeds of work.  There was no waiting around whilst training, so it was delivered at an effective speed and in a logical manner.  The useful parts were the knowledge on all areas of a build, foundations, damp course, cavity walls, etc.  Finally, all elements of brickwork was varied to understand tasks that may be used.

“I found decorative panel the most interesting and challenging as well. I would recommend this course to others because of the money you can save, gigantic money on garden walls and other stuff like simple bricklaying. This is my fifth course and never get bored, so thank you for providing the courses. Massive thank you to Tony who is friendly, full of knowledge, helpful and understanding.”

“The most interesting was learning about garden walls and decorative panel. Instructor Tony was very good human being and has adept knowledge on subject matter. He was always supportive and very good instructional ability. I didn’t see any dissatisfaction of this college. Everyone is friendly. Love to do more courses.”

“Excellent use of ELCAS, trade for life even if just used for personal use. Had no experience of bricklaying before the course, I can confidently say that I could build structures with correct technique to a good and safe standard.”

“The whole course was a new concept to me. Going from never having laid a brick before to building a cavity wall with designs has been invaluable. The deliver all of this in 2 weeks is outstanding and the tutors are fantastic.”

“What I like about the college is the atmosphere, the level of information and the confidence gained. While on the bricklaying course I spoke with the course co-ord about changing from the electrician course to the tiling course. Although this was probably inconvenient, it was approved without fuss or question. Really flexible and accommodating. Thank you.”

“I would recommend this course to others. Having no knowledge of bricklaying before coming onto this course, after seeing what Tony has got us to do is incredible. I think there is a good balance with practical and theory (lots of practical work which is what you need as a bricklayer). Highly recommend these courses (I’ve done 5 now, all good).”
