Construction Skills College was established in 2004 with the mission to provide practical, high-quality training courses that equip learners with real-world trade skills. We are a training centre aimed at people aged 18+, welcoming a diverse range of students. While the average age of our learners spans mid-twenties to mid-fifties, we’ve had participants from 18 to 72 join us.
Over the past two decades, we’ve trained thousands in trades like plastering, plumbing and heating, wall and floor tiling, carpentry, kitchen fitting, bricklaying, and domestic electrical installations.
Our students have gone on to transform their own homes, secure jobs in the industry, launch careers as property developers, or establish their own businesses as self-employed tradespeople. Beyond individual learners, we’ve delivered training for building companies, facilities management firms, and housing associations. We have previously worked with B&Q for several years to deliver training to their staff, including being the only training provider selected to deliver training on a new tile range to over 1,800 staff across 52 stores throughout the UK. Currently, we are training Wickes installers as part of their adult apprenticeship program.
Additionally, we are accredited to offer ELC-funded courses and have successfully trained over 2,170 service leavers. Our work has also been recognized with two visits from MPs due to our efforts in retraining individuals affected by redundancy.

The most interesting / useful parts of the course for me was generally learning that wiring is not difficult but requires careful planning and to work in a safe manner. I would recommend this course to others, the environment, the classroom and practical was excellent, informal and very instructive. The theory was clearly explained and easy to put into practice. The most interesting / useful parts of the course for me was in general learning a new skill. Tackling a useful skill that will enable me to be more self-efficient. I really enjoyed the effort and fiddliness of the wire stripping and fitting of the SWA cable, although labour intensive and I struggled, it gave me much respect and understanding. But, overall, each part was highly useful to me. I would recommend the course to others, gives great understanding. Allows for proper safety and installation works that would otherwise go potentially terribly wrong if most DIYed. Everyone helps everyone. It’s not just learning, its fun, doesn’t feel stressful or examined. Thanks, Dave, for giving me the confidence to do simple tasks and do it safely. The contents are very good to understand the overall principles how electrical systems work in homes. Both practical and theory lessons are sufficient to understand these principles. I enjoyed all parts of the course however, skimming was my favourite. Mark taught the theory and then walked around all of the bays continuously to offer advice to ensure that we picked it up properly and ensure that we were developing straight away. Couldn’t believe that after a couple of days we were all producing good work with no or very little experience. The most interesting part of the course was scribing the worktops with the router: male, female and bolt cuts. The most useful part was using the planer on the worktop and décor panels – more confident using the tool. The tasks were made harder with the floor and walls out, so it developed your skills more.

Having never fitted a kitchen before, I know have the knowledge and confidence to achieve this. Yes, I would recommend the course to others, it gives you the confidence to try things. If something doesn’t quite work out, John gave you the options to troubleshoot and find a solution, instead of just giving you the answer. John is a fountain of knowledge. He is very passionate about the trade and is a credit to the college. I now look forward to putting these skills into practice.

The most interesting / useful parts of the course for me was having my eyes opened to how easy, if you’re confident, fitting a kitchen can be. Worktops were the most daunting and will continue to be but now we’ve used a jig I’m happy to crack on at home. Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. A real sense of achievement. What I like about he college is everyone’s here to learn or teach and it shows that everyone enjoys being here.

Everything we learn was useful. Can’t prioritise a part with another as all tasks were interrelated. A mess up on a part will later lead to bigger mistake. How we troubleshoot our mistakes was very important. I would recommend this course to others as this course will allow you / give confidence to work on real world what we learnt here.

Fitting the worktops was the most useful part of the training but all the other little hints and tips were priceless and have added to the skills I already had. Great course, credit to John. Learned a lot and out of all the courses I feel confident to attempt to fit a kitchen myself with no issues. I couldn’t have achieved this if hadn’t attended these courses. You feel there is enough support to get things wrong and help to understand to put them right. Allocated materials, tools and rooms to work on was great. The tutors were very approachable and passed on useful info from their experience. Looking forward to my next course which starts in November. I’m moving on to be a property developer after 22 years of service in the army. This course has enabled me to become self-sufficient and not relying on others to fully refurbish a property. If someone is going to the route I’m taking I highly recommend this course.

From arriving and not having any knowledge on tiling, I feel confident to go out and tile for the customer. Mick is an excellent tutor, he brings a wealth of knowledge and is a credit to the college. The course would give you a good foundation if you were to undertake a career in plumbing. It is also very useful if you wish to carry out personal DIY tasks in your own home. The learning environment is well set out and I like the use of individual bays to carry out the various tasks/jobs. Steve’s teaching technique is second to none. He uses EDIP technique, Explain, Demonstrate, Imitate, Practice. Materials provided on course were more than sufficient. We learn more than enough knowledge on this 2 week course that we can fit a bathroom suites, power shower and heating – radiators. It’s good value for money for what we pay for course. One of the best part that I have found is the contact details from the tutor that he provided his mobile number, that he shared and we can contact him in the future for anything if we stuck on any job and need some help for fixing the issue and suggestions.

I found the central heating aspect to be the most interesting as I had no idea at the start of the course but now I have a clear understanding. The most interesting / useful parts of the course for me was the mechanics and the understanding of how to fit a bathroom from theory to practical, and the same with central heating, knowing and understanding how it all works to then fitting and problem solve heating systems and also maintain both plumbing and central heating. Cannot fault any of the course. Compared to other colleges we have been at with Wickes I have learnt so much more in two weeks than I have in 12 months. Very satisfied with the outcome of the course. The knowledge you get from the course is great and you have a good understanding how everything works. I learned more in two weeks than I did doing a Level 3 City & Guilds course. Everything on the course is the best quality if you want to learn plumbing. From knowing nothing to be able to fix radiator and valve issues at my home gave me assurance that it’s the best investment I have done in my life. I’m sure this course has given me some light that I can turn on to as a third career after military and IT. Course isn’t too technical and once you do it, it all makes sense. The tutor gave background knowledge, followed by physically showing the equipment and then allowing me to practice that physically in my bay was the most useful part. It allowed me to understand why something is happening in certain way. After practicing that in my bay allowed me the confirmation that I can do the job on my own.

I would recommend this course to others. I see these courses as investments not expenses. What I like about the college as it is easy to get to from most parts of the region. Each trade has plenty of space to work in – the building is well laid out. The most interesting / useful parts of the training course for me was the access to a wide variety of tools. Good to have a professional on hand to give the benefit of their own experience as well as in general how to do things.

A huge thanks to Tony (tutor) for his time, effort, knowledge and impact he had on my learning experience in a skill I had never completed before. Having attended other courses recently in other sectors outside of the courses offered at Construction Skills College, for example a landscaping course, the value for money and what is taught is incredible in such as short period of time. The tempo of the course suited all abilities and speeds of work. There was no waiting around whilst training, so it was delivered at an effective speed and in a logical manner. The useful parts were the knowledge on all areas of a build, foundations, damp course, cavity walls, etc. Finally, all elements of brickwork was varied to understand tasks that may be used.

“Very professional and knowledgeable in the trades excellent teaching staff had everything there that was needed to complete the tasks and assessments they were helpful and friendly would recommend to anybody wish to do trades in construction i have no complaint what’s ever on the teaching staff i feel like some of the courses could be longer ie the course is basic construction but there is a lot more could be taught or touched on. again my only gripe is time not enough to learn they have to teach.”
